The Boom RoomRelax on your boat under this airy and lightweight shade. Simple and elegant, The Boom Room creates a whole new room in your cockpit. There are no permanent fittings to install.
How does it work?
What is it made of? The shade cloth is a microaerated polyester fabric. While not 100% waterproof, the cover will provide good protection from rain showers in addition to excellent sun protection. The soft hand and light natural scent make this fabric a pleasure to use and relax under. It is easy to clean (just wipe it with a sponge), and dries quickly even when rolled up. How do I store it?The three long battens each break down into three smaller battens which splice together. This way the total length you are storing is under six feet. Simply fold and roll the fabric, and place the fabric and battens in the carrying bag (included.) What size should I get?Our sunshade is available in seven different sizes. The batten structures are all the same, just the cloth size varies. For larger boats, extensions are available to raise the structure above the boom if necessary. The available cloth sizes are:
MeasurementTo determine the correct size, you need 3 measurements from your boat: max length (m), boom height (h), and beam (b).
Max Length (m):This product is designed to go over the boom, in front of the topping lift. So the length you get should be shorter than the distance from the topping lift to the back of the mast. If you have no topping lift, you can go all the way from the backstay to the back of the mast, as long as there is a secure location to place the aft batten on the deck. Boom height (h): The boom height (h) should be measured from above the sail cover (if you will have a sail cover on), down to the height of the batten foot placement (generally the height of the gunnel or toerail). This will tell you how high your batten structure needs to be. Beam (b): Measure the beam of the boat at the widest point (generally under the boom). You are measuring for the width of the batten structure, so measure from gunnel to gunnel (or toerail to toerail) to get an accurate measurement. Size ChartsSince the battens are simply bent into shape, where you place them on the boat will determine the overall width and height of the shade structure. Because the height will vary depending on the width of the base of the battens, it is difficult to say exactly how high the structure will be, or how far down the sides the cover will come. The following sizing chart shows the recommended sizes for your beam and boom height. To use it, find your beam in the chart and then look across for the max height that a regular structure will have. If your boom height is taller than the max height, then you will need the batten extensions to raise the structure higher. Next, look across for the recommended widths. If the width column shows two options, use the following diagrams to help you determine which width you will work best for you.
AdjustmentsFor many boats, this shade will fit right out of the bag. However, since there are hundreds of variations of boat sizes and shapes, you may find that your shade will fit better with some minor adjustments. For example, you may decide that you would like the whole structure a little lower. Or, you may find that one of the battens will be sitting higher than the rest, or will be narrower than the rest, and needs to be shortened. If that is the case you can shorten one or all of the battens. Measure up from the bottom end of the batten (the non-tapered side), wrap masking tape or rigging tape around the cut location and cut with a hacksaw. If you would like your shade to be taller, two foot extensions are available. OptionsAft extension: If your boom is short, and your topping lift prevents you from covering the whole cockpit, consider an aft extension. The extension is easy to put on, and will connect to the main shade around the topping lift. Side curtains: Side screens are also available and are just as simple to use as the main shade. The side curtains extend from the front batten to the aft batten to keep out the low evening sun. |
